nano publishing

Mercury News | 02/12/2003 | Dan Gillmor: `Nano publishing' pushing the boundaries of journalism

GAWKER, GIZMODO: NEW YORK -- Welcome to the world of ``nano publishing'' -- an emerging brand of Internet-based journalism that is helping shape the future of news.

Gawker (wwwawker.com) is a weblog devoted to news and gossip about New York City and its gossip-heavy industries. Gizmodo (www.gizmodo.com), also a weblog, covers electronic gadgets. They're both fun to read, and highly informative.

The sites are largely the creation of Nick Denton, a former print journalist who has done several noteworthy online efforts. The most recent, before moving into weblogs, was a wonderful site called Moreover (www.moreover.com), which gathers news and headlines from across the Web.

Denton doest want to make too big a deal of it, but I think he's onto something important. He's pushing the boundaries of niche journalism in logical ways, making the most of the Net's ease -- and low cost -- of publishing, as well as the advantages that seem to accrue to pioneers.

I am very proud that Public Campaign (a beltway non-profit focusing on campaign fince reform) yesterday released this poster under a CC license. If this case has taught us anything, it is the importance of their battle.

Spectrum Policy Conference

Spectrum Policy: Property or Commons?

Spectrum policy is undergoing a fundamental reorientation in the United States and elsewhere. An emerging consensus holds that the traditional system of governmentally-allocated spectrum rights inhibits innovation and competition. The central question now facing policy makers is what form of spectrum management should replace the existing system.

Analog group draft charter; EFF starts new blog

A draft charter for the "Analog Reconversion Discussion Group" (ARDG) has been circulated, and EFF has today opened a new blog, Cruelty to Analog, addressing attempts to control digitization technology.

The ARDG is meant to address the so-called "Analog Hole", although the use of that term by the entertainment industries seems to have been nearly abandoned now.
