婦中町シルバー人材センターは、受注した剪定（せんてい）作業で生じる枝葉で堆肥（ たいひ）を作る取り組みを始めた。年間数百万円の処理費がかかっていた枝葉を再利用し 、さらに、出来上がった堆肥を環境問題に関心が高い主婦らに販売する試み。環境に優し いリサイクル事業として発信し、剪定作業の受注拡大と新たな雇用創出も目指す。
庭木の剪定は、人材センターにとって「主力事業」の一つ。一方で刈り取った大量の枝 葉の焼却処分を民間業者に委託していた。昨年度の処理費は約五百三十万円に上り、同セ ンターは大きな負担になるだけでなく、環境にも悪影響を及ぼすとして枝の活用法を模索 していた。
枝葉はＥＭ（有効性微生物群）と米ぬか、油かすと混ぜ合わせ、さらに生ごみを加えて 「ＥＭ生ごみ堆肥」を作る。同センターによると、この堆肥は台所の排水口の汚れ取り、 畑や庭の肥料、トイレのにおい取りなど幅広い用途を持ち、多くの需要が見込まれる。
作業はお年寄りでも手軽に出来、量産も可能だという。
人材センターは来月中旬に堆肥化を実現した後、希望家庭に自宅で堆肥を作ることがで きる用具の貸し出しも検討している。藤井正市理事長は「生ごみを減らす方策として町内 に普及させたい」と話した。
