クラブ・シーンを震撼させ続け、ビョーク、トム・ヨークを魅了した異才が放つ、ビッグ・バンド・プロジェクト！！

●ハウス、テクノ、ジャズ、ダンス、エレクトロニカなど何でもあり。ただでさえ音楽のパレットに制約のないところ、そこにさらにグラスの割れる音、ペットボトルを叩く音、プリンターの印刷音などが混じり合う。しかし、鬼才マシュー・ハーバートの采配の手が入った瞬間、バラバラに見えたパズルのピースに電流が通じ、鮮やかな輝きと熱気がわき上がる。アルバムを出す前から、「今の地球上でいちばん複雑で面白いビッグ・バンド」と呼ばれ、ジャイルス・ピーターソンのアプルーバルを得るほか、モントルー・ジャズ祭では話題をひとり占め。テクノとノイズ・ミュージックのクロスロードに注いだ異端が、今度はラージ・アンサンブルの渦の中ではじけたと大評判だ。「ノイズだってすべてがノイジーなわけじゃないんだ。むしろその後ろにある意味を探ることの方が大事だよ」(マシュー・ハーバート)。

●マシュー・ハーバートは、4歳でバイオリンとピアノを始め、7歳でオーケストラや聖歌隊でピアノを演奏。10代半ばでグレン・ミラー・オーケストラを模したラージ・アンサンブルに参加。16歳になると自分のバンドを率いてスウェーデン公演をするなど、早くから天才ぶりを発揮。父親がBBC(英国放送協会)でサウンド・エンジニアだったことから、エレクトロニクスやテクノロジーへの関心も深めていった。大学では、演劇と音楽の関係を研究し、ホーム・スタジオでサンプリングにも熱中。実験的なフィルム・スコアなどを書くうち、ボトル、自転車、カメラなどの生活品を使ったアンサンブルに挑戦。今日に至る独創的なサウンド・メイクを繰り返しながら、一方で大量消費にまみれた音楽と音楽産業への反抗心にも目覚めていった。'96年に“Wishmountain” を名乗って作品を発表。続けて“Doctor Rockit”名義で『Ready To Rockit』(Clear)をリリースすると、ハウス、テクノ、ジャジー・エレクトロニカなどのフィールドで話題を席捲。翌'97年にはダニ・シシリアーノをフィーチャーしたボーカル作品で幅を広げ、'98年にフル・アルバム『Around The House』(Phono)を発表。2000年になると、ハーバート自身が主催運営する三つのレーベルを興し、インディペンダントな創作活動を波に乗せてきた。音楽コンセプトやモティーフに応じて、「Radio Boy」「Herbert」「Doctor Rockit」の名義を使い分け、いかなるノイズをも楽音に変換する異能をアグレッシブに培養。DJとしてもソロ・アクトの舞台を持つほか、ビョーク、デビッド・バーン、ニールス・ペッター・モルベルらのアルバムにも足跡を残してきた。ビッグ・バンドによるアルバム制作を始めたのは、パリの新鋭振付家ブランカ・リから映画のサウンドトラックを委嘱されたのがきっかけ。これを聴いたジャイルス・ピーターソンの後押しも手伝って、'02年に「Matthew Herbert Big Band」プロジェクトを旗揚げ。モントルー・ジャズ・フェスティバルや日本公演の大成功をフックに、最新作『グッバイ・スウィングタイム』 (accidental/Ultra-Vybe)を制作。「Personal Contract for The Composition Of Music(PCCOM)=音楽制作における一身上の契約書」を提唱したうえ、「すべてにおいて何時もオリジナルである」ことにフォーカスした、類を見ないビッグ・バンド・アンサンブルを組み上げてみせた。ブルーノート東京に出演するのは初めて。
