『Macintosh SE』をウェブ上で忠実に再現

2004年5月19日 2:00am PT サイバー世界の遺産を保存しようと思い立った2人のドイツ人ウェブデザイナーが、献身的な努力により、米アップルコンピュータ社の懐かしの名機『Macintosh SE』(マッキントッシュSE)をウェブ上にシミュレーションの形で復活させた。
2人が立ち上げたウェブページ『ウェブSE』では、いまや偶像的な存在になっているアップル社の一体型マシンMacintosh SE(写真)が、米マクロメディア社のFlash(フラッシュ)を用いて忠実に再現されている。
誰でもウェブSEにアクセスすれば、使用マシンのプラットフォームに関係なく、1990年ごろに使われていたマック向けオペレーティング・システム(OS)『System 7』(システム7)の再現版を動かせる。
この再現版を開発したのは、ウェブサイトのプロジェクト管理者として働くオリバー・ゼールケ氏(32歳)とインターフェース・デザイナーのルーカス・パヨンチェク氏(28歳)で、いずれもベルリン在住だ。
ゼールケ氏はドイツから電話取材に応じ「このシステムのすばらしさを世に示し、忘れ去られないようにして、敬意を表現した」と説明している。「100％同じにはできておらず、ほんの少し簡略化されている。しかし、ほとんどの部分は触ることができるので、この小さなシステムがどのようなものかは、だいたいわかるはずだ」
今のところドイツ語版しかないものの、ウェブSEでは驚くほど忠実に再現されたSystem 7が体験できる。まず、システムを起動すると、「ハッピーマック」アイコンが登場し、「アイコンパレード」へと続く。アイコンパレードとは、起動時に読み込まれる機能拡張やコントロールパネルのアイコンが次々と表示されていく様子のことだ。
ひとたびウェブSEを「起動」すると、ほぼ完璧に再現されたインターフェース(画像)が登場する。オリジナルのSystem 7と同じように、アイコンをダブルクリックすればウィンドウが開き、ウィンドウは動かしたり、閉じたり、タイトルバーだけに折り畳んだりできる。
ウェブSEにはちゃんと機能するスクリーンセーバーが付属しており、デスクトップ上を動くマウスカーソルを目で追い回すユーティリティー『MyEyes』(マイアイズ)もある。また、『マックライト』と『マックドロー』も細部にわたって再現されており、実際に字を書いたり、絵を描いたりもできる(ただし、保存と印刷はできない)。
さらに、ウェブSEにはゲームも用意されている。『テトリス(画像)』、『スペースインベーダー』、『ポン』、『ブレイクアウト』(ブロック崩し)の4種類だ(『ブレイクアウト』は、スティーブ・ウォズニアック氏がアップル社を立ち上げる前、米アタリ社のために開発したゲーム)。
その他の部分も芸が細かい。システムクロックは正確な時間を刻んでいるほか、「システムフォルダ」を探ってみると、スクリーンセーバーの『アフターダーク』や実際に機能する「システム環境設定」の諸項目など、いくつかのコントロールパネルが忠実に再現されている。時計の表示形式やデスクトップの背景、システムに関する警告音はすべてここで調整可能だ。
さらに、「ディスク・ファースト・エイド」のアニメーションまで用意されており、ハードディスクを検査しているふりをして、最後に異常がなかったことを報告してくれる。
ゼールケ氏は「ちょっとしたジョークのつもりだが、往年のSystem 7の見かけそのままになっている」と説明する。
ウェブSEは3ヵ月の開発期間を経て、マックが20周年を迎えた今年1月に公開された。ゼールケ氏は、ウェブSEの開発には、余暇のうち300～400時間を費やしたのではないかと見積もっている。
「私は古いコンピューターに少々はまり気味だ」とゼールケ氏は話す。同氏は趣味でアップル社と米コモドール社の古いハードウェアを販売しており、自身のウェブサイトでは懐かしのマシンを十数台売りに出している。
ウェブSEの作成にあたり、ゼールケ氏とパヨンチェク氏は昔のMacintosh SEのスクリーンショットを、現在のシステムに移して、Flashに取り込んだ。システムそのものの大きさは230KBほどだが、ゲームやアプリケーションを含めたシミュレーション全体では1.4MBになる。フロッピーディスク1枚にぴったり収まるオリジナルのSystem 7と同じ大きさだ。
ゼールケ氏は「System 7はマックOSの基本だ」と語る。「複雑にできているが、複雑すぎない。まさにマックOSの古典と言える存在だ」
ゼールケ氏とパヨンチェク氏は2つの隠れ機能(イースターエッグ)までも再現した。1つ目は開発者たちにあてた『ブルー・ミーニー』(Blue Meanie)という詩で、これはオリジナルのSystem 7の初期バージョンに実際に含まれていた。そして、2つ目はゼールケ氏とパヨンチェク氏のスナップ写真(写真)だ。
ゼールケ氏は、ウェブSEがあらゆる著作権を踏みにじっている事実を認めながらも、異議を唱える者が現われないことを期待している。「『このような行為は許されない』と言われることを少し恐れている。だが、実際には言われないと思っている。オリジナルに敬意を表わす行為なのだから」
ゼールケ氏は、ウェブSEには教育的な側面と懐かしさが同居していることがわかったと話す。オリジナルのMacintosh SEを見たことがない若いユーザーはシステムの簡潔さと能力に感銘を受け、一方、年齢の高いユーザーは郷愁に浸っている。
リカード・リンデル氏はウェブSEのゲストブックで「非常に素晴らしい！」と絶賛している。「いくつもの思い出がよみがえってくる。あのころからほとんど何も変わっていないと思わずにはいられない」
Flashを用いて開発も行なうフィリップ・トロン氏によると、ウェブSEは技術的にも大変な成果だという。
「今回の一件によって、OSのかなりの部分をシミュレートする方法が示された」とトロン氏は語る。「いつの日か、複数のプラットフォームに対応したベクトルベースのシステムが登場するだろう。それがFlashかどうかはまだわからない。しかし、こうした実例が目にできるのは素晴らしいことだ」
ゼールケ氏はウェブSEをドイツ語以外の言語にも翻訳したいと考えている。すでに英語とスペイン語、オランダ語の翻訳者は見つかっているが、引き続きサイトを通じてボランティアを募集している。
