6スピーカー内蔵で完全な5.1ch再生が可能なヘッドホンが発売

内部に6個のスピーカーを持つことで完全な5.1チャネルサラウンド環境を実現したというヘッドホン「Theatre 6（ZM-RS6F）」がZALMANから登場した。販売を始めたのはUSER'S SIDE本店で、実売価格は8,800円（詳細は「今週見つけた新製品」参照のこと）。今回の製品は同店が独自に直輸入したもの。国内代理店のアスクも発売のアナウンスを出しており、同社経由の製品も近く出回るものと見られる。
　5.1チャネルサラウンドの再生に必要なスピーカーを、いわばそのままヘッドホン内部にまとめてしまったのがこの「Theatre 6」。従来の2チャネルのヘッドホンで擬似的に再現するいわゆる「バーチャルサラウンド」とは異なり、ハウジング内の6個のスピーカーでそのまま5.1チャネルサラウンドを再生してしまおうという、ある意味単純でストレートなコンセプトの製品ともいえる。

　左右両ハウジング内にはそれぞれ前方からフロント、センター、リアとスピーカーが並べられている。フロント×2、リア×2、センター×1、サブウーファー×1という一般的な5.1チャネルスピーカーシステムとは異なるが、8月末に同店が行なっていたデモ（5.1チャネル対応のDVDタイトルを「Theatre 6」で再生）では左右はもちろん前後の音の動きも感じられるレベルに仕上がっていた。スピーカー同士がかなり接近しているため、本来の広い音場を再現するには難しいが、一般的なヘッドホンのスタイルを前提とすると、これはやむをえないところだろう。

　また、ヘッドホン本体が316.8gと、構造の割には軽量なのも魅力。音場感はスピーカーシステムに届かないといった印象だったが、手軽に、あるいは深夜に5.1チャネルサラウンドを楽しむにはもってこいのアイテムといえそうだ。特にPCで使うにはゲームでの用途で便利に使えそうだ。

　ただし、ケーブルはすべてアナログタイプで（フロント、センター、リアのミニプラグを3本装備）、アナログ5.1チャネル出力に対応したPCやDVDプレイヤーが必須となる点には要注意だ。
