Dellは米国時間19日、自社のポータブルMP3プレイヤーが、Linux搭載PCに対応したことを発表した。
Dellの発表によると、同社のDell Digital Jukebox（「Dell DJ」）音楽プレイヤーがLinuxに対応し、LindowsユーザーもLsongsソフトウェアをインストールすることで、これを利用できるようになったという。Dellは、Dell DJを2003年10月に発表した。
Lsongsは、楽曲の取り込み／楽曲コレクションの整理／MP3や音楽CDの再生／音楽CDの作成といった機能を提供するアプリケーションだ。
Lindowsによると、デジタル音楽プレイヤーの分野はますます多くの企業が参入してきており、プレイヤーを販売する企業各社は成長を続けるオープンソースデスクトップ市場の取り込みを目指して動き始めているという。
「Apple Computerと交渉してiPodで（Linuxも）サポートするように働きかけたが、しかし彼らはいまの閉鎖的なシステムを維持したいということだった」とLindowsの最高経営責任者（CEO）Michael Robertsonは声明のなかで説明している。「手頃なMP3プレイヤーを探しているLinuxユーザーは、Dell DJを真剣に検討するべきだ」（Robertson）
これに関してAppleではコメントを差し控えた。
Jupiter ResearchアナリストのMichael Gartenbergによると、このニュースはLindowsユーザーにとっては良い知らせだが、他の人間にとってはあまり重要ではないという。
「Lindows自体が（OS）市場でゼロに等しい存在であることから、Dell DJがLindowsをサポートしても音楽プレイヤー市場にはほとんど全く影響がないだろう」（Gartenberg）
