エネルギーの空中採取可能？　電磁波蓄える夢の宝箱開発

開発されたフォトニックフラクタル

単純な素材と構造だけで、なぜこのような働きをするのかは未解明だ。

　１カ所にとどめておくことが難しかった電磁波や光を穴あきの立方体の中に閉じ込める夢の技術を信州大と大阪大、物質・材料研究機構（茨城県つくば市）の共同研究グループが開発した。研究グループは今後、昼間蓄えた光を夜に放出させる電池ならぬ「光池（こうち）」や、空中に飛び交う電磁波をためて電源に利用する携帯電話への応用などが考えられるとしている。近く米国の物理学専門誌フィジカル・レビュー・レターズに論文が掲載される。

　グループは、信州大理学部の武田三男教授と本田勝也教授、大阪大接合科学研究所の宮本欽生（よしなり）教授ら。

　立方体は細部の構造と全体の構造が相似形になっているフラクタル構造を持ち、穴は正方形。グループはこの構造をフォトニックフラクタル（フォトニックは「光子の」の意味）と名付けた。

　宮本さんが、使い慣れていた酸化チタン系の微粒子を混ぜたエポキシ樹脂だけで２７ミリ角、約９グラムのものを作り、様々な周波数の電磁波を当てたところ、ＵＨＦよりやや高い周波数８ギガヘルツ（ギガは１０億）の電磁波は反射も透過もしなくなり、中心部の空洞にたまり続けた。照射を止めても、１千万分の１秒間は内部に残っていた。

　同じ素材、大きさで穴を開けていないものだと、反射も透過もした。立方体を２．７ミリ角に縮小すると周波数が１０倍の８０ギガヘルツの電磁波を閉じ込めるなど、大きさや材質により、たまる電磁波の周波数を変えることもできた。

　単純な素材と構造だけで、なぜこのような働きをするのかは未解明だ。

　内部にとどまる時間１千万分の１秒は、現在のスーパーコンピューターで数万回計算ができる時間に相当。データ保持の時間としては十分長く、コンピューターへの応用も期待できるという。

　光は電磁波の一種で周波数は数百テラヘルツ（テラは１兆）。実験はまだだが、理論的には光でも同じ現象が起きると考えられるという。

　今後、閉じ込めておく時間をもっと長くできれば、「光池」などの他、電磁波障害を防ぐ素材ができる。また、電磁波のエネルギーを熱に変えれば、効率のいい加熱炉やがんの温熱療法など多彩な応用が考えられる。

　電磁波や光を閉じ込める技術は、広範囲の技術革新につながるとして国際的に激しい競争が続いている。従来はフォトニック結晶という特殊な結晶が研究の中心。だが、この結晶は小型化が難しく、閉じ込められる時間も最近までフォトニックフラクタルに比べて数分の１程度と短かった。

　武田さんは「２年前の大学入試で監督官をしていた時、フラクタルの専門家の本田さんと雑談になった。フラクタル立体の性質が研究されていないと聞き、『論文が１本くらい書けるかな』と、この実験を提案した。結果に驚いた」と話す。

　フォトニックフラクタルを作り、実験を担当した宮本さんは「まだ夢みたいな部分は多いが、大きさや材質の違うものを組み合わせれば、幅広い周波数の電磁波や光を閉じ込められる。閉じ込められる時間ももっと長くしたい」としている。

　すごい結果だ。ここまでいい性能のものはなかった。小型化すれば光も閉じ込められるのは、まず間違いない。フォトニック結晶に関連する理論には、ノーベル物理学賞が出ているが、現在、実用化の難しさに直面している。今回の成果は理論、応用の両面で大きな刺激になるだろう。

　電磁波は周波数の低い方から電波、赤外線、目に見える光、紫外線、Ｘ線などに分類される。テレビのＶＨＦ電波は１００メガヘルツ前後の電磁波。緑色の光は周波数が約６００万倍の６００テラヘルツ。同じ振幅なら、周波数が高い方がエネルギーは大きい。光は波であり、光子という素粒子の集まりでもある。
