「やられたな，という感じ」（あるコンデンサ・メーカーの技術者）。電子光学機器などを手掛ける日本電子が，2003年10月3日に発表した電気2重層コンデンサの技術が話題を呼んでいる（発表資料）。質量当たりのエネルギー密度が50～75Wh/kgと，従来の電気2重層コンデンサの5倍～10倍と高いからだ。この値は鉛蓄電池の特性を大きく超え，Ni水素2次電池に肩を並べる。

　電気2重層コンデンサは，Ni水素2次電池やLiイオン2次電池に比べて急速に充放電できる。携帯機器の充電時間を数十秒から数分程度の短い時間に圧縮することも夢ではない。しかし，これまではエネルギー密度が低かったので応用範囲が限られていた。今回の技術が実用化すれば，電気2重層コンデンサの用途がグンと広がり，2次電池の勢力地図を大きく塗り替える可能性がある。そう考えた業界関係者が，大きな興味を示しているのだ。

　日本電子といえば，電子顕微鏡などの分析機器に強みを持つ企業である。その同社が全く異分野の電気2重層コンデンサに取り組んだきっかけは，電気2重層コンデンサのエネルギー密度の向上を狙う企業からの構造分析依頼だった。「当社は高精度の透過型電子顕微鏡などを保有する。それを使って電気2重層コンデンサの電極材料である活性炭の内部構造を調べていた。共同研究を進めるうちに，活性炭内部で起こっている様々な現象の把握が進んだ」（日本電子）。その後，その企業との共同研究の成果を利用して，電気2重層コンデンサを実際に試作しようということになったようだ。それが今回の発表につながった。「これほど大きな騒ぎになるとは，正直びっくりしている」（日本電子　広報部）。

　ただし日本電子は，自社で電気2重層コンデンサを量産する予定はないとする。量産技術を保有する他のメーカーと協業したい考えだ。そのため技術発表と同時に，提携先メーカーの募集を開始した。様々な業種のメーカーからの問い合わせが殺到している状況だ。（蓬田宏樹）
