アマゾン探検隊の続き
探検隊は、すでに文明に接触した先住民などを含み、森林監督官や先住民研究家
三十五人で形成されていた。エスタード紙の記者たちも同行していた。同日、先住
民の森林案内人二人が、ジュタイー川付近でグループから離れてしまった。
森の中の道がふさがれているのを見た二人は、「先住民の立ち入り禁止のマークだ。
我々の知っている先住民のものではない。様子を見てくる」と述べて先に向い、行
方が分からなくなった。急遽、九人の監督官の小グループがつくられ、二人の捜索
が始まった。
九人は、二人が蒸発した場所から先へ進み、何者かがつるであんだ門をくぐり抜
けた。地面に先住民が使う赤い塗料を見た時は、度肝を抜かれるほど驚いたという。
すると突然悲鳴が聞こえ、ばたばたと森の奥へ何者かが逃げていく。騒音の方向
へ九人が恐る恐る前進していくと、突然森が開け、畑らしきものが見えた。その奥
に見たこともない先住民部落が目に飛び込んできた。
先住民の居住家屋は十四軒あり、高さ二メートル、長さ一・五メートルあり、ヤ
シの葉で覆われていた。先住民専門家によると、大人四十人と子供十人が入れる大
きさだという。
相当驚いたのか、先住民たちは焚き火も消さずに姿をくらました。ちょうど食事
時だったのか、七種のサルの肉や、バナナ、アサイー、パタウアーが豊富にあった。
またマンジオッカでつくられた飲料が入った土製のつぼも発見された。
住宅の中からは、クラレーと呼ばれる毒の入ったつぼが発見された。矢に塗って
獲物に当てれば、一瞬のうちに体がしびれて動けなくなるという。九人は、部落を
囲む森の木陰から、先ほどの先住民たちの殺気めいたまなざしを感じた。彼らは、
息をひそめて矢をこちらに向けている。
この情景は、まるで十六世紀の植民地時代に舞い戻ったかのようだった。まして
や二十一世紀には、考えられない光景だった。この先住民たちの習慣や言語、容姿
など全く分からない。探検隊は、近くで残された日用品や住宅などを検査したい衝
動にかられたが、事故的侵入による先住民との衝突を避けるため、写真だけ撮って
その場を後にした。
案内人の二人はそこから二キロ先で見つかった。二人は、自分たちの親戚ではな
い全く違う種族の先住民の部落だと知って、即座に逃げてきたと話した。
